Just when you think you’ve seen it all, go about 100 feet under the ground and discover the Louisville Mega Cavern Indoor Bike Park. Yep, you heard it right. This 320,000 square foot bike park with over 45 trails, jump lines, and pump tracks is nestled comfortably in a climate-controlled cavern far beneath where your ordinary bike park would be. What these means is it doesn’t matter when you take your next adventure to Kentucky—this year-round, 60-degrees park is waiting for you. Remember to bring your helmet—and to find out more information about this kick-ass cavern, just ask Jeremiah Heath, Manager at the Louisville Cavern.
“The idea was brought about early 2014,” said Heath about the recent beginnings of the Mega Cavern. “It was determined to be a great idea that was adopted by the community and elsewhere. Official construction began shortly after in the fall of the same year.”
Located just south and underground of the Louisville city center, the Mega Cavern was once a gigantic limestone quarry and encompasses a total of 100 acres (4 million square feet). The grand opening was on February 9th and it is already catching a lot of buzz around Louisville and national news outlets.
And with a little something for everyone, this bike park is also drawing quite the crowds. Whether it’s single track cruising, pump track pushing, or backflip aerials, the tracks are built so that not only all skill levels can ride, but all skill levels can ride together. And with such freedom, and without the need for sunscreen, a few helpful guidelines need to be followed:
Riders must be 7 years or older to ride and anyone under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. They don’t allow spectators since all the room is dedicated to the riders, so everyone is expected to pay to go into the cavern. Helmets are required, and they even have bike rentals.
Daily passes are $24 for a four hour pass, while if you want to spend the whole day (8 hours) pushing down on the pedals it’s $40. Louisville Mega Caverns Bike Park hours are Monday through Thursday from 10am to 6pm, and Friday through Sunday from 10am to 8pm.
