Curious what it’s like to backpack the Pacific Crest Trail? Follow along as we interview Kim, our fearless VP of Production, Design, and UI, about her experience hiking and camping along a 32-mile stretch of the trail in Oregon.
WHY THE PCT?
My love of survival shows definitely played into it — I was so curious about the different skills you need to be successful when you’re out in the backcountry. This trip was the perfect way for me to learn some of those skills, with the added bonus of getting to hike a piece of the world-famous PCT.
IS THERE A REASON YOU CHOSE THE WOMEN-SPECIFIC TRIP?
My daughter was getting ready to head off to college, and I was excited about sending her out into the world with this awesome outdoor experience under her belt. But I also wanted to make sure she felt as comfortable as possible during the trip. With that in mind, the women’s trip was an obvious choice for us — it sounded so inviting and free from intimidation around trying something new. We ended up with an incredible group; I would do another women’s trip in a heartbeat.
THIS TRIP COVERS 32 MILES OVER FOUR DAYS — HOW DID YOU PREPARE?
After I booked, the tour operator emailed us a 6‑week recommended training plan, which was super helpful! I hiked local trails, adding in elevation gains and a weighted pack over time. We were also provided a detailed packing list, which I followed closely. I already had some of the basics, but I borrowed a number of items from friends and coworkers and purchased a few things as well.
WHAT MADE THE TRIP SO SPECIAL?
Definitely the people, the women on the trip. The group size is small, which allowed for tons of one-on-one time with each other and with our (amazing!) guide, Julie. She was a wealth of knowledge and it was so great to be able to ask as many questions as I wanted and have plenty of time for feedback. The trip was made even more special by the beauty of our surroundings and all the knowledge I gained, including the principles of practicing Leave No Trace.
