The Yankee Leaper Jumps Niagara: Did you know? On October 7th (that’s today!), 1829, Sam Patch became America’s first famous daredevil after his successful 125-foot plunge into the Niagara River at the base of Niagara Falls. A crowd of thousands gathered in the fog, wind, and rain to watch his stunt, but just minutes before he was scheduled to jump a metal support chain snapped from the ladder. The stunt was delayed until 4pm, at which point Patch climbed to the top of the platform on Goat Island and pencil-dived into the churning water near Cave of the Winds. When Patch did not emerge, a rescue boat circled the location where he had disappeared. Soon, though, a great roar swept through the crowd as Patch was spotted standing onshore waving to the spectators.
