The One-Wheeled Wonder: Did you know? On October 13th (that’s today!), 2011, Mike Tierney, a ski-patroler in Aspen, Colorado, accomplished the most badass hill climb on a unicycle in history. For 11 hours, Tierney charged up Hawaii’s highest peak, Mauna Kea, (13,796 ft.). The route has been dubbed the world’s toughest hill climb. What sets Tierney’s accomplishment apart is that he did it all on a 29-inch wheel. He arrived at the summit triumphantly blasting Led Zepplin’s “A Whole Lot of Love,” and emotionally high-fived a park ranger before he hoisted the unicycle above his head in a moment that he described as Nirvana.
