Bad Grand-Mamma Jamma: Did you know? When she was 13-years old, Columbia Sportswear chairman Gert Boyle and her parents fled Nazi Germany for Portland, OR. Later that same year, the family bought a small hat distributorship. They re-named it the Columbia Hat Company after the river that inspired their new home. The company grew into Columbia Sportswear, which Boyle would one day lead. Over the years, the spirited matriarch served as CEO and the centerpiece of the company’s iconic “One Tough Mother” advertising campaign, which compared the toughness of its products to Boyle. And it turns out Boyle really is tough. In November 2010, the 86-year-old arrived at home to find a strange man in her driveway holding a fruit basket. But for the man, the real peach was Boyle, who he intended to kidnap and hold for ransom for $20,000. He pulled a firearm and demanded Boyle let him into her house. She did, but not before pressing the silent alarm. When police knocked at her door, the unsuspecting man instructed Boyle to answer it. With her wrists bound, she said hello to the officer and informed him that there was a man with a gun in her house. The man was later captured.
