Pride And Prevalence: Did you know? On September 25 (that’s today!), 1804, the famous Lewis and Clark expedition nearly came to a screeching halt when they encountered a large party of Teton Sioux warriors that demanded a toll of tobacco before allowing the expedition party to head upriver. Outnumbered and outmatched, the expedition members agreed to supply the Teton with some tobacco. The chief waved his well-armed warriors off, and the expedition team continued on their way, more than likely avoiding what would have been a deadly end to one of the greatest expeditions of all time.
