Woman on Top of the World: Did you know? On May 16 (that’s today!), 1975, Japan­ese moun­taineer Junko Tabei became the first woman to reach the peak of Mt. Ever­est, the tallest moun­tain in the world. Ear­li­er in the all-female expe­di­tion, Tabei was buried beneath snow for over six min­utes after an avalanche struck camp.
