Trea­sure Detri­tus: Did you know? On July 31 (that’s today!), 1715, sev­en days after depart­ing from Havana, Cuba, eleven ships chocked full of trea­sure were lost at sea in a hur­ri­cane near present day Vero Beach, Flori­da. Although heav­i­ly for­ti­fied against pirate attack, noth­ing could pre­vent the car­nage that Moth­er Nature dealt. Sink­ing every boat in the fleet, near­ly 1,000 peo­ple and tons of gold and sil­ver coins (approx­i­mate­ly 14 mil­lion pesos worth) were lost to a watery grave. All of the trea­sure on board would not be recov­ered for near­ly 250 years and some arti­facts and even coins still wash up on Flori­da beach­es to this day.
