Teens on Top of the World: Did you know? Mountaineers celebrated a historic ‘first’ on this day in 2001, when Temba Tsheri, a 16-year-old Sherpa from Nepal, became the youngest person to summit Mount Everest. Tsheri held onto the record until May 2010 when 13-year-old American climber Jordan Romero took his crown. Tsheri had first attempted to climb the mountain at age 14, but was forced back due to violent storms. The subsequent frostbite caused him to lose five fingers.
