First U.S. Woman Stands Atop Sum­mit of the World: Did you know? On Sep­tem­ber 29th (that’s today!), 1988, Sta­cy Alli­son of Port­land, Ore­gon became the first Amer­i­can woman to sum­mit the world’s high­est peak, Mt. Ever­est. It was her sec­ond attempt at the peak. She spent 29 days clam­ber­ing up the south­east ridge of the Himalayan giant before reach­ing the icy sum­mit of the world. At 29,305 feet above sea lev­el, she stood in the rar­i­fied air where jet­lin­ers fly and tem­per­a­tures often dip beneath ‑30F and there is not enough oxy­gen to sur­vive for an extend­ed peri­od of time. Ever­est is con­sid­ered the ulti­mate test-piece of a seri­ous mountaineer.
