O Captain! My Captain!: Did you know? August 24 (that’s today!), 1875, the prolific daredevil Captain Matthew Webb of Great Britain became the first man to successfully swim the English Channel without assistance. Admired for both his prowess in the water and his penchant for risk-taking, Captain Webb was intrigued by the challenge of spanning the treacherous body of water. Lubing himself up with porpoise oil for added warmth, Webb entered the water for his monstrous effort. Swimming against the tide for the next 21 hours and 45 minutes, and nearly being stymied from the sting of a jellyfish, Webb persevered with a nip of brandy, and waded onto the beach an instant international celebrity.
