IN OTHER NEWS:
Norwegian of the Century: Did you know? August 7 (that’s today!), 1947, marks the conclusion of an epic voyage of attempted validation as Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl captained his 40-square-foot balsa wood raft onto a small island near Tahiti, proving his hotly debated theory that prehistoric South Americans could have colonized the Polynesian islands. But scholars proved more difficult than the sharks and storms of the Pacific for Heyerdahl. Even though his raft, Kon-Tiki, was built using indigenous materials and in the style of early South American Indians and despite the fact that he successfully captained it 4,300 miles from Peru to Raroia, historians and anthropologists continued to shoot down his theory. However, some things are better than recognition from your peers. The underdog subsequently published a book about his adventures that gained him such popularity in Norway he was named “Norwegian of the Century.”
