Muir Summits the High Sierras: Did you know? On October 21st (that’s today!) the legendary naturalist and conservationist John Muir made his first successful summit of the highest peak in the continental U.S., Mount Whitney. He set out by himself from the town of Independence, and climbed into the alpine. There was no wood to build a fire, so he “danced” to keep from freezing. Instead of dancing all night, he decided to begin climbing directly up the east face for warmth in the early morning. He said his “well-seasoned legs enjoyed the 9,000 feet on his direct approach” to the rooftop of the country.
