Unlocking Cho Oyu: Did you know? On October 19th (that’s today!), 1954, Herbert Tichy led a climbing party up the northwest ridge to the first successful summit of Cho Oyu. At 26,906 feet, Cho Oyo is the sixth tallest mountain in the world, and it is the most accessible summit of the world’s 14, eight thousand meter peaks due to the proximity of a glaciated mountain pass that Tibetans and the Khumbu’s Sherpas use as their main trading route. Initial climbing parties, however, including Sir Edmund Hilary’s attempt in 1952, were turned away by the challenging climb. It was not until Tichy and his men unlocked the northwest ridge with a route through a potentially challenging high-elevation crux move, that Cho Oyo became known as the easiest of the world’s highest summits to climb.

First U.S. Woman Stands Atop Summit of the World: Did you know? On September 29th (that’s today!), 1988, Stacy Allison of Portland, Oregon became the first American woman to summit the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest. It was her second attempt at the peak. She spent 29 days clambering up the southeast ridge of the Himalayan giant before reaching the icy summit of the world. At 29,305 feet above sea level, she stood in the rarified air where jetliners fly and temperatures often dip beneath ‑30F and there is not enough oxygen to survive for an extended period of time. Everest is considered the ultimate test-piece of a serious mountaineer.

Little Sure Shot: Did you know? On August 13 (that’s today!), 1860, one of the greatest female sharpshooters in American history was born. At eight years old, Oakley shot a squirrel right between the eyes, taking her first shot ever. It wasn’t luck, and as she continued to hone her sharpshooting skills word of her legendary aim spread. Oakley was known for her female charm and fellow sharpshooter Frank Butler became smitten and soon the two were married. The couple began performing in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show and soon became one of the most popular acts of the time. One of Oakley’s trademark tricks was to shoot a cigarette out of her husband’s mouth or a dime out of his fingers. Oakley would stay with the traveling show for more than 15 years, giving performances around the world.

If you need an invitation to join The Clymb, they’re also good places to get one.

I spent about five minutes debating the title to this post. The University of Oxford Writing and Style Guide recently decided that writers should drop the Oxford Comma. So, according to them, the title should read, “Cushe, Coal and Nomis.” Although, using it resolves ambiguity so that you know Coal and Nomis aren’t together. However, with the comma, today’s event sounds like a law firm.

Yes, these are the things that keep me up at night.

Well, let’s get today’s events started, shall we?

Cushe (pronounced Cushy) designs footwear that’s unique and challenges the boundaries of footwear design. In their case, love is in the details — the little things you can and can’t see that make their product that extra bit unique and special. And speaking of special, our members can shop Cushe footwear for men and women, starting today, at up to 55% off. Check out the Cushe event here.

Coal designs headwear that are more than accessories because they understand that your style is a part of you, your personality — and why not have headwear that is as unique as we are from one another? Shop an array of Coal’s beanies and fedoras at up to 60% off now. And if you’re so inclined, share photos of your purchase on our Facebook page. Personally, I think everyone looks great in a fedora.

Nomis offers high quality apparel that looks as good as it fits. No, seriously, their designs are awesome. Check out our Nomis event with outerwear, apparel, accessories and swimwear at up to 55% off here.

Make sure you check us out on Facebook (especially later today when we’ll have a cool contest announcement) or Twitter. We’re always around, waiting to answer your questions or hand out invitations to join.
