Kitesurfing Teahupo’o: Did you know?

On September 14th (that’s today!), 2006, professional kitesurfers Jeremie Eloy, Julien Sudrat, and Yannick Salmon gathered at the surf break known as Teahupo’o on the French Polynesian island of Tahiti. Teahupo’o loosely translates to mean, “to sever the head,” and fittingly, the break produces a dangerous, hollow wave that ranges from 10–70ft. What makes the wave so dangerous is that it crashes over a coral reef that is only 20 inches beneath the surface, producing a dense wave that is considered the “heaviest wave” in the world. On this day the waves were in the 10ft. range and as thick at the lip as they were tall. The three kiteboarders rode the wave to become the first kiteboarders to ever surf Teahupo’o.

Champion of Champions: Did you know? To say that Italian professional cyclist Angelo Fausto Coppi was a prolific athlete would be an understatement. Between 1940 and 1953, he won the Giro d’Italia five times, the Tour de France twice, and the World Championship once. Italians knew him as the “Champion of Champions.” He was so good that organizers for the 1952 Tour de France had to double the prize money they were offering for second place just to generate interest. On July 20 (that’s today) that same year, Coppi won the Tour de France as expected. What wasn’t expected was by how much: the Champion of Champions came in nearly half an hour over his closest competitor. No one has won a Tour by that big of a margin ever since.

Wild in the Streets may sound like a spring break activity, but it’s actually a worthy cause partnering Emerica and Power House Productions, an artist-run, non-profit which organizes neighborhood stabilization and revitalization.

Wild in the Streets 2012 goes down June 21st in Detroit and will benefit Power House’s latest project, Ride It Sculpture Park, a do-it-yourself style skatepark built by skateboarders. The goal of the park is to create a space where neighborhood kids and adults can meet, play, create, build and exercise.

Your Mom: Did you know? On May 9 (that’s today!), 1914, President Woodrow Wilson became the ultimate momma’s boy after issuing a presidential proclamation establishing Mother’s Day as an official U.S. holiday. Wilson set the holiday as the second Sunday in May, possibly because his momma had no class except on Sunday. BAM! Just kidding, Mr. Wilson. No need to haunt our office. We love our moms and your mom and all moms and are looking forward to another great Mother’s Day…even if your momma’s arms were so hairy bigfoot took her picture.
