The Parachuting Lady: Did you know? On October 12th (that’s today!), 1798, Jeanne Genevieve Labrosse became the first woman parachutist in history. She jumped from nearly 3,000 feet from a helium-filled balloon floating over Paris. The seed of her record-breaking stunt was planted two years earlier when she watched Andre Jacques Garnerin’s first hydrogen balloon flight. She became his pupil, and soon they married. The two registered a patent for the parachute and began touring Europe jumping from balloons.

Forget DIY furniture, Muppet chefs, and bikini teams. We’ve got two awesome brands on the docket today that are about to move to the front of the list of things you associate with Sweden. From now on, when somebody waves the blue and yellow, the flag is going to remind you of stylish protection gear from POC and fit-focused performance fitness apparel from Craft. How do you like them meatballs?

Here’s some more info on today’s featured brands:

POC: Sweden-based POC develops stylish personal protective gear for gravity sports athletes. Headquartered in Saltsjobaden outside of Stockholm—a center for research and development in the areas of safety, medicine, and healthcare—the company is able to tap some of Europe’s leading experts to help with product development. POC then straps its athletes into the gear and has them put it to the test and recommend changes. Next, the POC design team goes to work to ensure the products are as exquisite as they are safe. The end result is a line of lightweight, high performance gear with groundbreaking design that meets the high standards of professional athletes and medical experts. Look good while protecting your precious parts with POC helmets, goggles, sunglasses, & more, available today at The Clymb for member-exclusive pricing.

Men’s & Women’s Craft: In the beginning, Craft founder Anders Bengtsson spent an inordinate amount of time looking at his underwear. After heavy exercise sessions outside his home in Borås, Sweden, Bengstsson would weigh his skivvies and use a moisture gauge to measure how sweaty they were. He used his research to develop the ideal layer to wear next to the skin—a garment that transports moisture outwards with as little absorption into the fibers as possible. The resulting brand, Craft, is now a global leader in peak-performance athletic apparel. Today on The Clymb, we’re celebrating yet another example of Swedish ingenuity with Men’s and Women’s Craft cycling, running, and fitness apparel, for member-exclusive pricing.

IN OTHER NEWS:

Free Fallin’: Did you know? On April 19 (that’s today!), 1987, a real-life rescue that seems out of the pages of a graphic novel took place in the Arizona skies. While moving into position for a formation drop, skydiver Debbie Williams collided with another skydiver. The impact knocked her out. When Gregory Robertson noticed his colleague tumbling to the ground, he did what any reasonable superhero would in that situation—he tucked his arms to his sides and went into a 200-mph free-fall to catch up. At 3,500 feet, with the red Arizona desert getting closer by the second, Robertson reached Williams. Pulling out of his dive, Robertson propped the unconscious woman into an upward position, yanked her ripcord, and then opened his own parachute. Williams landed hard on her back and was rushed to the hospital. She survived the incident. Mild-mannered Robertson later told the New York Times it was “just another day of skydiving.”

The Coward Robert Ford: Did you know? Today in 1882, popular outlaw Jesse James was shot to death in Missouri. The culprit? Robert Ford, a member of James’s gang. Killing Jesse James turned out to be a hugely unpopular move for Ford, who became such a target for harassment he moved to the mountains of Colorado. He was murdered ten years later while operating a tent saloon there. His murderer, Edward O’Kelley, was pardoned after 7,000 people signed a petition in favor of his release.

If life is a journey made up of many adventures, you need to be able to do three things: thrive on change, learn and appreciate the past, and look forward to the future. With a grassroots beginning in a garage 20 years ago, sewing and selling clothes suited for climbing and yoga, prAna understands this better than most.

As prAna has grown, they’ve held on to the values they believe in — sustainability and being global citizens – and not just incorporated them into their practices and materials, but aligned themselves with like-minded individuals like climber and prAna ambassador Chris Sharma.

We want to hear your stories so visit us on Facebook today and share. Wherever you see yourself going, we hope it includes the mindfully-designed apparel from prAna.
