Tip of Capricorn: Did you know? On September 4 (that’s today!), 1774, en route to New Zealand aboard his ship HMS Resolution, famed British navigator Captain James Cook spotted an uncharted archipelago. The principle island was an uncharted 7,000-square-miles of beautiful beaches and mountains that hosted a sparse population of local people. Cook put the island on the map and named it “New Caledonia,” because it reminded him of Scotland. (Caledonia is a Latin name for parts of northern Scotland.) European missionaries settled the island in 1843 and by 1863 it was being utilized by the French as a penal colony. Today, New Caledonia, located 750 miles east of Australia, is a popular tourist destination with a population of around 250,000.

Gonzo Journo: Did you know? On July 18 (that’s today!), 1929, in Louisville, Ky., a strange child was born into the world. As a teenager, he would revel in vandalism, pyromania, and alcohol. He would grow into an even stranger and more debauchery-prone man. Looking for a reason to celebrate today? How does the birthday of gonzo journalism pioneer Hunter S. Thompson sound to you? A self-proclaimed political junkie, Thompson was famous for immersing himself in stories. He wrote such best-selling books as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hell’s Angels, and The Rum Diaries. The real-life Thomson’s impressive writing style and eclectic character traits made him a cult hero. He is the inspiration for pretty much every character Johnny Depp ever plays.

Craft: In the beginning, Craft founder Anders Bengtsson spent an inordinate amount of time looking at his underwear. After heavy exercise sessions outside his home in Borås, Sweden, Bengstsson would weigh his skivvies and use a moisture gauge to measure how sweaty they were. He used his research to develop the ideal layer to wear next to the skin—a garment that transports moisture outwards with as little absorption into the fibers as possible. The resulting brand, Craft, is now a global leader in peak-performance athletic apparel. Today on The Clymb, we’re offering Men’s and Women’s Craft cycling, running, and fitness apparel, for member-exclusive pricing.

Captain Kidd’s Comeuppance: Did you know? Of all the tyrannical scallywags hanged for piracy during the 18th century, few are as well remembered in popular culture today as Captain Kidd, who met the gallows on May 23 (that’s today!), 1701. Accused of murder, plundering, and generally terrorizing the high seas, Kidd was hanged at London’s Execution Dock. But historians now entertain the possibility that Kidd, who spent the final years of his life fighting to clear his name, was actually just a privateer who fell into ill rapport with politicians after becoming involved in several unpopular but arguably justifiable skirmishes. Of course we can’t ignore that those historians might just be trying to throw us off the trail of Kidd’s legendary buried traaaaay-sure.
