Rosetta Stone Home: Did you know? Heiroglyphics. Until the early nineteenth century, attempting to translate the language was like trying to read, well, hieroglyphics. And why not? It had been dead for nearly 2,000 years before anyone could make heads or tails of it. But that all changed on today’s date in 1799, when a French soldier from Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign stumbled across a black slab covered in mysterious etchings outside the town of Rosetta. As it turned out, the etchings were fragments of passages written in Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and Egyptian demotic. And they all said the same thing! When wielded by archaeologists, the mysterious slab that’s known popularly today as the Rosetta Stone was the key to translating hieroglyphics. Keep your eyes peeled, Clymbers. You never know what you’ll find out there!
