Con­quer­ing the Kang­shung Face: Did you know? On Octo­ber 8th, (that’s today!), 1983, James D. Morrissay’s Amer­i­can climb­ing expe­di­tion became the first crew to suc­cess­ful­ly ascend the 11,000-foot Kang­shung Face, the east­ern face of Mt. Ever­est. Their route is on the most remote por­tion of the moun­tain and is con­sid­ered one of the most dan­ger­ous sum­mit routes because hang­ing glac­i­ers on the upper half present con­stant avalanche dan­ger, while over­hang­ing rock but­tress­es with unsta­ble ice tow­ers define the low­er half of the route. After five and a half weeks of gru­el­ing effort, the sev­en-per­son team reached the sum­mit of the world at 29,029 feet.
