Conquering the Kangshung Face: Did you know? On October 8th, (that’s today!), 1983, James D. Morrissay’s American climbing expedition became the first crew to successfully ascend the 11,000-foot Kangshung Face, the eastern face of Mt. Everest. Their route is on the most remote portion of the mountain and is considered one of the most dangerous summit routes because hanging glaciers on the upper half present constant avalanche danger, while overhanging rock buttresses with unstable ice towers define the lower half of the route. After five and a half weeks of grueling effort, the seven-person team reached the summit of the world at 29,029 feet.
