The World’s Loudest Sound: Did you know?

On August 27th (that’s today!), 1883, the volcanic Indonesian island of Krakatoa unleashed its fury in a series of four gargantuan explosions that made what is to this day, the loudest sound in recorded history. Never mind the ash plume that rocketed 50 miles into the atmosphere, or the shock waves that traveled around the earth seven times, Krakatoa takes the cake for earsplitting explosions. Scientists say it was like 200 Megatons of dynamite. Anyone within ten miles of the blast went deaf. Ships in the Sunda Strait contended with 100ft tsunami waves and the sailors’ eardrums ruptured. The rain of hot ash and pumice on deck convinced many sailors they were under attack, and they were, by a pressure wave created by the final explosion that sped away from the blast at 675mph. The sound was mistaken as cannon fire in the Indian Ocean, on the small island of Rodrigues, 3,000 miles away.

Sometimes there’s no time to trifle with chocolate and Wenger, the official supplier of knives to the Swiss Army since 1908, has had an army to outfit. That’s pretty sweet too. Arm yourself with Wenger watches, offered today at The Clymb for member-exclusive pricing.

Something Just Jumped Up And Bit Me: Did you know? On August 11 (that’s today!), 1806, Meriwether Lewis was shot in the hip, probably by one of his own men. Lewis was hunting elk near a thickly forested riverbank on the Missouri River when he felt a sharp stinging sensation envelop his buttocks. The blow spun him around and slashed a three-inch gash in his hip. Standing behind him was the blind-in-one-eye Private Cruzatte. “Damn you,” Lewis cried. “You have shot me.” Cruzatte never confessed even though the bullet lodged in Lewis’ flesh was of the same caliber as the gun he held in his hand. The wound was not serious, and two weeks later, when the crew arrived in St. Louis two years after embarking on their epic journey to the Pacific, the excitement had overshadowed the mysterious shot.

IN OTHER NEWS:

Keen Name: Did you know? The word ‘keen’ can be used as an adjective to describe anything from someone having a sharp and penetrating mind to something having a sharp edge or point. As a noun, ‘keen’ is a vocal lament, like what you’d hear at a traditional Irish wake. But the footwear brand KEEN is not named for any of the above. The company is named for its founder, shoe designer and world-class sailor, Martin Keen. Sick of smacking his toes as he scrambled around the deck of his boat while wearing traditional sandals, Keen invented the Newport, which offered more support and a little something new—a protective toe cap. That spirit of innovation continues to drive KEEN to redefine footwear.

With the great outdoors as its playground, it’s no wonder the outdoor industry continues to lead the way in practicing corporate environmental sustainability, and their impressive efforts have not gone unnoticed. Last week, The White House honored the Outdoor Industry Association with the Champions of Change award, recognizing the association’s Sustainability Working Group and the group’s development of the Eco Index.

The Eco Index is an open-source, web-based software tool which allows product designers in the outdoor industry to input and evaluate source materials that reduce the environmental impact of their products. A few of our brand partners and Portland neighbors including Icebreaker, KEEN, Columbia, and Adidas have been early adopters of the software. The pilot program of the Eco Index evolved to become apparel specific with assessments for footwear and equipment in development.

What does this mean for the industry and its consumers? The program allows the designers to track and improve upon their products’ environmental impact considering material types and sourcing, labor practices, waste, and packaging while creating transparency between manufacturers and suppliers. While it’s still a few years off, the goal is to provide consumers with an eco-tag – much like nutritional facts listed on food products – so that they’re more conscious of their purchasing decisions and the brands they support.

While some brands already offer up transparency in what goes into their products (Icebreaker provides customers with a code enabling them track their merino wool back to the exact sheep who donated it), the effects of an eco-tag would go beyond consumer education. Outdoor gear and apparel companies would be challenged to consider the environmental impact of each step of their products’ development and competitors would be forced to step up their game, which is what we call a win-win for consumers.

For more information on the Eco Index visit here.

For some, skiing is a hobby. For others it’s a way of life.  I was fortunate enough to grow up in places known for having a landscape filled with high mountain peaks, easy accessibility to outdoor recreation, and winters that made outsiders forget about any previous notions of what they defined as “powder.” Self-proclaimed or not, I found myself surrounded by “ski-bums” – a lot of them.  The funny thing about ski-bums is that for the most part those who don’t look at skiing as a way of life and instead a hobby, aren’t usually privy to the passion behind these fearless snow enthusiasts. Their lifestyle seems foreign, maybe a bit lazy and feverishly unambitious. What people don’t realize however is that these “ski-bums” have passion like no other. They are willing to sacrifice comforts of life to do something they love. They choose to do something that excites them and makes them happy every single day of their lives despite having the option to take the path of least resistance.  In my years living in ski communities, there is one thing that always amazes me and never surprises me: passionate skiers/riders always find a way to make it work in everything they do. They turn adventures into a lifestyle and passion into profits.

FlyLow did exactly that.  The small company was born from the creative minds of two Jackson Hole “ski-bums” and in a few short years, FlyLow has made a name for itself in a sea of outdoor gear and apparel.  They call co-founder Dan Abrams a soul skier and for good reason.  The FlyLow story is one of our favorite human-powered adventures and we’re excited to debut them on The Clymb today. Shop men’s and women’s freeride ski apparel here.

Then, Walk This Way with boots, trail runners, and more for men, women and children, from some of your favorite footwear brands like Chaco, Teva, KEEN, VIVOBAREFOOT, and more!

And you can shop your hearts out when this exclusive 3‑day event begins today at 9am PST. Members will receive up to 50% off KEEN footwear. That’s a big deal. If you need a membership, stop by Twitter or Facebook and we’ll get you started.

Show of hands: how many of you got up at the butt crack of dawn in search of Black Friday sales?

You’re all a lot braver than I am.

Oh, glorious three-day weekend, how we love thee. The only thing we love more than three-day weekends are exclusive holiday multi-brand events. Oh, and four-day weekends.

We can’t deliver on the latter, but boy do we have an awesome deal for you guys today.

You ready for this?

I don’t think you are, but I’ll tell you anyway.

Beginning today at 9am PST, you (yes, you, members of The Clymb) will receive exclusive savings on gear and apparel for men, women and kids, on a variety of brands like:

  • Teva
  • Gramicci
  • Mountainsmith
  • GIRO
  • DAKINE
  • KEEN
  • CamelBak
  • Reef
  • and more, more, more.

Now, you may be asking yourself, “What does exclusive pricing mean?” Well, I don’t toss around a word like “exclusive” all willy-nilly. For the first time ever we’re offering up to 90% off. That’s right. I said it. And, because we’re awesome like this, we’re reducing shipping to $6.98 for this event.

The quantities are extremely limited, so you can’t mess around; items will go quickly! The event ends on Sunday (9/5) at 9am PST. If you need an invitation so you can see what all the fuss is about (and get in on the sweet deals), just send us a tweet and we’ll make it happen.

Wow. An amazing three-day event and a three-day weekend? You’re so welcome.
