Muir Summits the High Sierras: Did you know? On October 21st (that’s today!) the legendary naturalist and conservationist John Muir made his first successful summit of the highest peak in the continental U.S., Mount Whitney. He set out by himself from the town of Independence, and climbed into the alpine. There was no wood to build a fire, so he “danced” to keep from freezing. Instead of dancing all night, he decided to begin climbing directly up the east face for warmth in the early morning. He said his “well-seasoned legs enjoyed the 9,000 feet on his direct approach” to the rooftop of the country.

Fresh on the menu today:

CytoSport: You should struggle to achieve your fitness goals, not to choke down your fuel. Makers of popular nutritional products such as Cytomax and Muscle Milk, CytoSport is the leading name in athletic performance fuel. Popular for a reason, their products taste good and they work! Click through to check out our selection.

Nikwax: Outdoor gear falls into one of two categories: brand spankin’ new or dirty. And if it’s not waterproof you can often change the second category to just plain rank. Do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of Nikwax cleaning and waterproofing products before it’s too late.

Tri Supplies: The gun fires. Ahead lies the course: some 25 kilometers of pain that must be overcome by foot and arm and bike. Behind, the competition is closing the gap. Maybe it wasn’t such a good decision to wear a tracksuit. Don’t let nightmare gear turn into a rude wakeup call in the midst of a race. Click through now to pick up your dream gear before it’s all gone.

Knife & Tool: Angus MacGyver (You didn’t know Angus was his first name, did you?) wouldn’t need much more than a shoelace and a jar of vinegar to make himself a palace of the woods. The rest of us should bring along a multi-tool or knife, just in case. Find what you need to make camp or escape prison here.

DVS: DVS products are a hybrid of performance and style that are designed to look good and sustain rough use. Though it caters to the breadth of the boardsport world, the company still stands by its original mantra: made for skaters, by skaters. Click through now!

ALSO AVAILABLE: Aventura, SKORA, United by Blue, & More

Mac the Knife: Did you know? Television’s most awesome chemist, Angus MacGyver, knew how to do a lot with a little. That’s why the Department of External Services hired him as a top-level secret agent. But he didn’t defuse terrorist bombs and escape countless locked rooms all on his own. Over the years, Macgyver carried various models of both Victorinox and Wenger multi tools. The knife seen in the opening of each episode is a Wenger. In many parts of Europe and Southeast Asia, multi-tools or Swiss Army knives are often referred to and marketed as ‘Macgyver Knives.’

Axe Me Again, For the First Time: Did you know? SOG makes a mean tomahawk. And we’re selling it right now. One of the most obvious benefits to having a tomahawk is throwing it into things. But how? According to, you grip the ‘hawk’ as if shaking someone’s hand. Then you swing your throwing arm down by your side. Once the head passes your leg, you swing your arm back up spring-style until the blade is behind your head, at which point you fire your arm forward as if throwing a baseball, making sure to release the hawk when your arm is straight, at which point the hawk will fly from your hand directly into the target because you are awesome at things like this. The final step is the most important: Look at your buddies to make sure that they know that you know that you are more equipped to survive the apocalypse than they are. Then demand the rest of their beef jerky out of principle.

The Ibex Climbeth: Did you know? Natural mountaineers from the day they’re born, Alpine ibex dwell on precipitous ledges between 5,900–10,800 feet in the European Alps. Male Alpine ibex horns grow up to five feet in length, which has long made the animal a target for poachers and big-game hunting European royalty. Hunted nearly to extinction by the early nineteenth century, the Alpine ibex became the face of some of the world’s earliest wildlife conservation efforts. In 1919, Italian king Vittorio Emanuele III donated his royal ibex hunting reserves to the state in order to create Italy’s first national park: the Gran Paradiso National Park. It worked. Today there are over 40,000 Alpine ibex roaming the Alps.
