Colum­bus ‘Dis­cov­ers’ His Dis­taste For Choco­late: Did you know? On July 30 (that’s today!), 1502, on his final voy­age to the New World, Christo­pher Colum­bus became the first Euro­pean to get a taste of choco­late. And he did­n’t like it. The icon­ic explor­er was trad­ing with natives on a small conif­er­ous island off the coast of Hon­duras known today as Gua­na­ja (pro­nounced “Gwa-nah-ha”) when he was offered cacao bean in exchange for goods. Colum­bus was con­fused as to why the natives found the strange pel­lets valu­able enough to use as cur­ren­cy. The chief whipped up some xoco­latl (Aztec-style choco­late) for him but the explor­er found it bit­ter and dis­taste­ful. After return­ing to Spain, he pre­sent­ed King Fer­di­nand and Queen Isabel­la with xoco­latl but they did­n’t like it either. Had they, Spain would have got­ten into the choco­late trade sev­er­al decades soon­er. Whoops.
