‘Muri­can Cam­pout: Did you know? On June 23 (that’s today!) out­doors lovers all over the coun­try will leave the bright lights of the city to sleep out under the stars for a nation­wide camp­ing night known as the Great Amer­i­can Back­yard Cam­pout (GABC). Start­ed eight years ago by the Nation­al Wildlife Fed­er­a­tion (NWF)—a pow­er­house con­ser­va­tion edu­ca­tion and advo­ca­cy orga­ni­za­tion based in Virginia—the event is designed to encour­age peo­ple to get out­doors in hopes the expe­ri­ence will help them real­ize the impor­tance of pro­tect­ing it. Last year over 175,000 par­tic­i­pants took part in the event. Accord­ing to NWF, only 25 per­cent of US chil­dren play out­side reg­u­lar­ly so don’t for­get to bring the whole family.
