‘Murican Campout: Did you know? On June 23 (that’s today!) outdoors lovers all over the country will leave the bright lights of the city to sleep out under the stars for a nationwide camping night known as the Great American Backyard Campout (GABC). Started eight years ago by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF)—a powerhouse conservation education and advocacy organization based in Virginia—the event is designed to encourage people to get outdoors in hopes the experience will help them realize the importance of protecting it. Last year over 175,000 participants took part in the event. According to NWF, only 25 percent of US children play outside regularly so don’t forget to bring the whole family.
