Hudson Anchors at Manhattan: Did you know?

On September 11th (that’s today!), 1609, the Dutch sailor Henry Hudson sailed his ship the Half Moon into the Upper Bay of Manhattan. Hudson was on a mission for the Dutch East India Trading Company to find a rumored passage through North America. He anchored in the bay near what would later be called Ellis Island, and journals from his crew revealed that they viewed the island of Manhattan and the surrounding landscape as inhospitable, filled with wild animals, poisonous snakes, mountains, and dense forests.

Treasure Detritus: Did you know? On July 31 (that’s today!), 1715, seven days after departing from Havana, Cuba, eleven ships chocked full of treasure were lost at sea in a hurricane near present day Vero Beach, Florida. Although heavily fortified against pirate attack, nothing could prevent the carnage that Mother Nature dealt. Sinking every boat in the fleet, nearly 1,000 people and tons of gold and silver coins (approximately 14 million pesos worth) were lost to a watery grave. All of the treasure on board would not be recovered for nearly 250 years and some artifacts and even coins still wash up on Florida beaches to this day.

Today you can shop Canari — functional, high-quality cycling gear, and Native eyewear — always innovative and uniquely stylish.

But where will you go tomorrow? One day is short notice to plan an adventure that will take you tens of thousands of miles around the world, over unforgiving terrain by foot and hand, and to the top of inspiring peaks. What about what’s right outside your door?

Native encourages the exploration of your habitat and claiming your space there. No one understands this better than Alastair Humphreys, a seasoned world adventurer who has ridden his bike 46,000 miles around the world. He spent 2011 embarking on microadventures that began and ended at his doorstep in a London suburb. From living off the land for four days to swimming the Thames, each microadventure provided a physical challenge and allowed him to meet people he might not have otherwise. Humphreys said his goal was to “break down the elitism in adventure,” and he found there is adventure to be had just by breaking your routine and exploring the world right outside your door.

Humphreys is one of several people vying for National Geographic’s “Adventurer of the Year.” Each has accomplished greatness in their own way and has inspired others to explore the world near and far.
