New Route on Makalu: Did you know? On October 17th (that’s today!), 2008, Vince Anderson and Marko Prezelj climbed a new route up Makalu, otherwise known as Kangchungtse, a Himalayan peak with a summit elevation of 24,850 ft. They left their basecamp to climb all day through fierce winds and gathering storm clouds. The two climbers needed to take four breaths for each step, and when they reached the summit at sunset they did not celebrate, they hugged each other and then began their descent to their basecamp in the dark.
