New Route on Makalu: Did you know? On Octo­ber 17th (that’s today!), 2008, Vince Ander­son and Marko Prezelj climbed a new route up Makalu, oth­er­wise known as Kangchungtse, a Himalayan peak with a sum­mit ele­va­tion of 24,850 ft. They left their base­camp to climb all day through fierce winds and gath­er­ing storm clouds. The two climbers need­ed to take four breaths for each step, and when they reached the sum­mit at sun­set they did not cel­e­brate, they hugged each oth­er and then began their descent to their base­camp in the dark.
