The Icy Archipelago: Did you know?

On August 30th (that’s today!), 1873, an Austro-Hungarian Polar Expedition led by Karl Weyprecht and Julius von Payer discovered an icy archipelago while searching for a northeast passage to the North Pole. They named the cluster of 191 ice-covered islands Franz Joseph Land, after their emperor. The islands, located north of Russia, had no inhabitants except for polar bears, walrus, arctic foxes, and seals. Today, the islands have several Russian settlements where the settlers rely solely on walrus and seal meat for sustenance.
