The Yankee Leaper Jumps Niagara: Did you know? On October 7th (that’s today!), 1829, Sam Patch became America’s first famous daredevil after his successful 125-foot plunge into the Niagara River at the base of Niagara Falls. A crowd of thousands gathered in the fog, wind, and rain to watch his stunt, but just minutes before he was scheduled to jump a metal support chain snapped from the ladder. The stunt was delayed until 4pm, at which point Patch climbed to the top of the platform on Goat Island and pencil-dived into the churning water near Cave of the Winds. When Patch did not emerge, a rescue boat circled the location where he had disappeared. Soon, though, a great roar swept through the crowd as Patch was spotted standing onshore waving to the spectators.

Mayflower Sets Sail: Did you know?

On September 16th (that’s today!), 1620, the Mayflower departed Plymouth, England bound for North America. The 102 passengers aboard were English and Dutch Separatists seeking freedom in the new land from religious persecution. The 66-day journey faced savage seas and the captain, Christopher Jones, considered returning to England. Storms pushed them far north of their intended Virginia destination, and they finally landed in Massachusetts in late November well into the harsh New England winter.

Balloon Over the Alps: Did you know?

On August 21 (that’s today!), 1972, Don Cameron and Mark Yarry became the first people to fly a hot air balloon over the Alps. The pair launched from Zermatt, Switzerland, and piloted their balloon, the Cumulo Nimbus, to 17,798ft over some of the highest peaks in the Alps, including Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn. Their voyage ended 36 miles away in the small, pastoral town of Biella, Italy, where thousands of residents swarmed to congratulate the balloonists on their accomplishment.

Patagonia alpine ambassador and author, Steve House, had a lot of time to think about his life, his achievements, and his regrets as he lay on a ridge on the north face of Mount Temple. He’d just fallen 80 feet, breaking his ribs in 20 places and his pelvis twice. Rescue was two hours away, and as his chest cavity filled with blood, his mind filled with all he’d done and still wanted to do – at the top of that list was contributing more to his community.

That was almost two years ago and from that life assessment, Alpine Mentors was born. Alpine Mentors helps to train the next generation of alpinists by partnering them with experienced climbers. The mentors coach and encourage the young climbers so that one day they can ascend the world’s greatest mountains in a lightweight, low-impact style.

We felt compelled to help spread the word about such an inspiring organization. If you know of a young alpinist who would benefit from their efforts, Alpine Mentors is accepting applications until April 1st. Click here for more information.
