Unlocking Cho Oyu: Did you know? On October 19th (that’s today!), 1954, Herbert Tichy led a climbing party up the northwest ridge to the first successful summit of Cho Oyu. At 26,906 feet, Cho Oyo is the sixth tallest mountain in the world, and it is the most accessible summit of the world’s 14, eight thousand meter peaks due to the proximity of a glaciated mountain pass that Tibetans and the Khumbu’s Sherpas use as their main trading route. Initial climbing parties, however, including Sir Edmund Hilary’s attempt in 1952, were turned away by the challenging climb. It was not until Tichy and his men unlocked the northwest ridge with a route through a potentially challenging high-elevation crux move, that Cho Oyo became known as the easiest of the world’s highest summits to climb.

On September 29th (that’s today!), 1988, Stacy Allison of Portland, Oregon became the first American woman to summit the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest. It was her second attempt at the peak. She spent 29 days clambering up the southeast ridge of the Himalayan giant before reaching the icy summit of the world. At 29,305 feet above sea level, she stood in the rarified air where jetliners fly and temperatures often dip beneath ‑30F and there is not enough oxygen to survive for an extended period of time. Everest is considered the ultimate test-piece of a serious mountaineer.

Here’s what we’ve got in store for you:

Credit: Fjallraven

Fjallraven: Time for your first and only lesson in Pronouncing ‘Fjallraven.’ Start by making an ‘F’ sound, like you’re about to say ‘France.’ Now drop the ‘rance’ and just hold the ‘F.’ Got it? ‘Fffffffff.’ Then tap your Southern side and say, ‘Y’all.’ Are you following? Try it with us now. ‘F’Y’all.’ Then tap your inner Edgar Allan Poe and say, ‘Raven.’ Let’s try it together: F—Y’all—Raven. Fjallraven. Congratulations. Not only are you saying the name of one of the most well-regarded outdoor brands in Europe, but you’re also speaking in a foreign tongue. Fjallraven is Swedish for ‘arctic fox.’ Aptly named, the company creates sleek-looking technical outdoor apparel that’s tough enough for the mountains and tundra of northern Sweden. We’re extremely excited to be offering Men’s and Women’s Fjallraven apparel for insider prices. Click through now to see why you should be too.

Alchemy Goods: While medieval alchemists sought to turn lead into gold, the folks at Seattle-based Alchemy Goods strive to turn seemingly useless stuff like blown-out inner tubes, old seatbelts, and advertising banners into cool, unique-looking accessories like bags and wallets. Alchemy Goods is a great brand that upcycles waste material instead of creating more. Durable with innovative design unlike anything you’ve likely ever seen, these accessories are guaranteed to be conversation starters. We’re excited to have Alchemy Goods on the menu—especially at member-exclusive pricing.

A global leader in sustainable manufacturing and renowned for its dedication to protecting the places we play, the company proves that financial success and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive. Slip into a statement with Patagonia footwear, available today at The Clymb for member-exclusive pricing.

Brooks-Range: From the beginning, Brooks-Range has been a company for mountaineers, by mountaineers. It’s founder, Matt Brooks, is a certified mountain guide who has served as chair of the Presidents Council of the American Mountain Guides Association. His numerous alpine feats include knocking out the first ascent of Galactic Hitchhiker, the longest technical rock climb in North America. Brooks and his small team of mountain enthusiasts provide top-quality equipment and apparel for alpinists, backcountry travelers, and professional mountain and ski guides. Each product they design is put to the test by some of the world’s top mountaineering and backcountry professionals. Step off the hiking trail and into the big leagues with Brooks-Range technical apparel and accessories, available today at The Clymb for member-exclusive pricing.

In other news…

Mountain Hop: Did you know? Like all things curious and awesome, the Brooks-Range rabbit logo was inspired by a chance encounter with a stranger from the East. The story behind it goes a little something like this: Founder Matt Brooks was climbing alongside a Russian, looking to make conversation, when he noticed his mountain compatriot was wearing a rabbit pin. Either out of confusion or as a token of friendship, the Russian climber ended up giving him the pin. Later, back at the office, the Brooks-Range team decided to feature the pin on some product as a lark. The inside joke turned into a marketing win however, as customers became attached, some going so far as to call in and express their concerns over rumors that the company might pull it. The folks at Brooks-Range laughed and shrugged their shoulders and the rabbit became the new face of the company. That a funky trinket that passed hands on a mountain could come to represent a major company by happenstance is just another reason why the outdoor industry is awesome.

One of the greatest things about Portland is how bike-friendly it is. While daily urban bike commutes in other cities may be a challenge, for Portland cyclists, it’s a breeze. With more than a half million bike commuters, Portland leads the way in this good-for-the-body-and-soul, and environmentally-friendly mode of transportation.

That’s why when Erik, Lars, and Dan – longtime cyclists – decided to launch a company that produces simple and beautiful gear for the everyday urban cyclist, Portland was the natural choice for their headquarters. We’re excited to welcome their vision, Portland Design Works (PDW), to The Clymb. Shop a selection of pumps, fenders, grips, reflectors, and more at exclusive member pricing.

And no bike commute would be complete without a Chrome bag – perfect for carrying your PDW gear and whatever else you need to get through the day, these bags won’t tear if you take a tumble or become a soggy mess in the rain. Toughen up your commute with Chrome messenger bags and footwear.
