National Park Service’s Birthday: Did you know?

On August 25th (that’s today!), 1916, is the birthday of the National Park Service. With the stroke of a pen, president Woodrow Wilson established the agency to administer the 14 National Parks and 21 National Monuments that were already in existence. Since then, the National Park Service’s domain has expanded to 58 National Parks containing some of the most iconic landscapes in the United States. The notable western writer and historian, Wallace Stegner wrote, “National parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best.” We couldn’t agree more.

Adios Nova Albion: Did you know? On July 26 (that’s today!), 1579, English sea captain, pirate (at least that’s what the Spanish called him; the English celebrated him as a successful privateer), slaver, and otherwise famous-despite-his-swinish-ways Renaissance-era explorer Francis Drake set sail from modern-day California to cross the Pacific Ocean. The trip was part of the final leg of Drake’s celebrated circumnavigation of the world, making him the second expedition leader and first Englishman to accomplish the feat. When Drake first landed on the Pacific Coast somewhere north of modern-day San Francisco, he claimed the land for England and gave it the name Nova Albion.

Liberty Leaper: Did you know? In the early 20th century, urban climbing enthusiasts could make a decent living as aerial carpenters, or steeplejacks, scaling buildings, chimneys, and church steeples to carry out repairs or maintenance. One of the most famous steeplejacks in America was Frederick Law, who was the first person to climb and paint the flagpoles of New York’s Pulitzer and Singer Buildings. In February 1912, Law became famous for pulling off one of the first recorded BASE jumps, leaping off the torch-bearing hand of the Statue of Liberty and floating down with a parachute. Even with the parachute, Law crashed hard to the ground. In its 1912 account of the incident, the New York Times reports, “he then got up, dusted himself off and personally packed up and carried his parachute to his office in the Hudson Terminal building. He did not want to be interviewed”

On the court of the 2012 NBA All-Star game, and blazing a trail across the hip-hop stage and the soccer field are all places you’d expect to see adidas’ iconic three-stripe logo, representing a mountain and challenges to be faced; goals to be achieved. However, adidas Outdoor has made a name for itself in pushing outdoor athletes to achieve their personal best.

adidas Outdoor’s lightweight and durable outerwear are sported by athletes like pro climber Alexander Huber, slackline champion Michi Aschaber, and freerider/climber Denise Wenger.
