Here There Be Dragons: Did you know? According to the Chinese zodiac calendar, 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. This round it’s a water dragon, meaning we can expect a wild ride without the chaos a year of the fire dragon might bring. (Of course that’s just if you hope the Mayans and Nostradamus are wrong in their predictions that the world will suddenly end this year.) For Li-Ning, the biggest Chinese name in sportswear, the 2012 dragon lends both passion and wings as the premium brand launches for the first time in the United States. Li-Ning is a celebration of the ‘New China,’ where premium goods are designed by culture makers and artists who demand an exquisite attention to detail in each of their high-end products. For example, the brand is celebrating Year of the Dragon with athletic shoes inspired by thousands of years of Chinese art, including ancient porcelain vases and the bold yellow robes worn by leaders of the ancient Tang Dynasty.

Gregory: When you look at the success of Gregory today, it’s hard to imagine that founder Wayne Gregory first operated the hugely successful company with little more than a sewing machine and a Volkswagen van. Argentine Explorer: Did you know? Whether you’re looking for a distraction or some trivia to impress your friends with today, you’ll want to start by researching the name Francisco Moreno. Born in Buenos Aires on May 31 (that’s today!), 1852, Moreno was a scientist and anthropologist who became one of the most famous explorers in Argentine history. He’s sort of a Christopher Columbus meets Charles Darwin meets Indiana Jones. Among many things, a natural history museum, a town, and the biggest glacier in the country bear his name. Moreno is perhaps most remembered for his adventures exploring remote regions of Patagonia. On one of these missions, he escaped captivity by an isolated tribe just one day before he was to be executed by them.

Talkin’ Fiesta: Did you know? Despite what you may think, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day. In fact, the holiday is hardly celebrated in Mexico at all. The only place in Mexico that is as committed to Cinco de Mayo as the United States is Puebla, where according to the Associated Press, “the holiday is rooted in a complicated and short-lived 1862 military victory over the French.” The primary reason you’re preparing piñatas right now is because beer companies have successfully turned the day into a reason to imbibe. But don’t let that stop you. The fact that spring is here is as good a reason as any to drink Tecate.

Happy Tuesday, Clymbers. Hopefully your mood this week is a little less gloomy than the Portland skies have been after this past gorgeous, teasing weekend. The sun is trying to push back through though and we’re optimistic that once it wins out again it will be here to stay. Wish us luck! In the meantime, we’ve got some great lifestyle apparel and audio equipment on the docket to help get you through your next rainy day. IN OTHER NEWS:

Raspberry Monkey Brain: Did you know? We’re excited to have Skullcandy on the menu today at The Clymb but the original skull candy is of course brains. Delicious, delicious brains. But unless you’re a zombie, you have to actually prepare the dish. Remember that scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom where Indy and company are served chilled monkey brains in bowls made from the animals’ decapitated heads? According to Jonathan Deutsch, Ph.D., in his book, They Eat That? A cultural Encyclopedia of Weird and Exotic Food from Around the World, eating monkey brains straight from the skull like that is based purely on legend and if done in actuality could result in serious health risks. Brain requires more for preparation than a saw and a spoon. For one, it needs to be cleaned before being ingested. Deutsch recommends bathing the meat three times: first in cold water with a small amount of vinegar, second in a cold water bath and third with saltwater. The cast of Temple of Doom of course didn’t have to stomach any actual primate tissue when taking a taste. Propmasters used custard and raspberry sauce to make their dish.

Today’s events are as soothing as a long sip from a cool creek—a cool creek that, of course, is not crawling with Giardia-inducing parasites. (We avoid that kind of event.)

Here’s what we’ve got…

Mountain Hardwear: A pioneer of innovation in an industry hardened by pioneers, Mountain Hardwear is the ideal partner for any mountain challenge. If you’re someone who sets out to find and challenge the edges of your potential, push past those edges and find your best self in the process, then Mountain Hardwear makes the gear for you. Don’t miss out on Mountain Hardwear Jackets, hiking pants, shirts, shorts, and more, on sale today at The Clymb for member-exclusive pricing.

Hurley: Hurley is an authentic lifestyle brand rooted in surfing, skating, music, and art. The company’s inspiration is drawn from the ocean and its constant state of change. Live your passion with Men’s and Women’s Hurley apparel, on sale now at The Clymb for member-exclusive pricing.

Polarmax: There’s a noticeable bottom line with Polarmax baselayers and it isn’t something that will keep wearers sitting down: keep the product warm and the manufacturing and shipping process green. Many of the company’s performance garments are made from recycled yarns and fibers; it uses soy ink to print product information on recycled paper; and it uses recyclable packaging for shipping. That’s a bottom line you can feel good about showing off. Today, we’ve got Polarmax baselayers on sale for member-exclusive pricing.

Skullcandy: Park City, Utah-based Skullcandy markets audio equipment that’s designed to sustain the rigors of the mountains. Skullcandy products can take a thrashing and keep on rocking, which is cool, but how will they look, you ask? Cool? That’s what you hope, but where’s the proof? In December 2008, Forbes magazine claimed in print that the company made, “the world’s coolest ear bud.” Forbes isn’t all that cool in its own rite, but the publication’s conclusion was based in part on testimonials from all the snowsport athletes, NBA players, and supermodels that walk around rocking out with Skullcandy products. Even Forbes can recognize how cool that is. Feel validated by Forbes even when you’re broke, with Skullcandy audio headwear and apparel, on sale now at The Clymb for member-exclusive pricing.

SCOTT: It’s best to keep SCOTT technical apparel and outerwear in a closet all by itself, so your other gear doesn’t get jealous. It’s a cruel world in the gear closet and once you close the door and the lights go out, the tattered pieces are gonna attack the biggest threat. Keep that closet door closed for long enough and you may never see your SCOTT jacket again. And your friends wonder why you always wear that flannel. A leading producer of performance winter equipment and apparel since 1958, SCOTT outfits snowsport athletes for the worst conditions. Today at The Clymb, we’ve got SCOTT outerwear and apparel on sale for member-exclusive pricing. Finding a safe closet to put it in is up to you.

PLUS… There’s still time to save on Saucony Apparel, Nidecker, Suunto, Something for Every Season, Gregory, Lole, Run & Bike, Men’s & Women’s Footwear, SPY, & Brooks Running.

IN OTHER NEWS: Did you know? In 1958, Ed Scott, a talented engineer and ski racer living in Sun Valley, Idaho, revolutionized the sport of skiing with a single invention: The tapered aluminum ski pole. Ed Scott’s invention immediately replaced the sport’s existing use of bamboo and steel. That revolutionary product launched a new brand, SCOTT. Ed Scott’s initial vision of technical innovation would serve as the cornerstone company philosophy as the brand matured and expanded to new markets.

Ever wonder what professional athletes tune up to keep calm when surrounded by the inevitable stoke right before dropping from a helicopter to ski down a 50 degree pitch? Or what Olympic skier Jen Hudak plays before she makes her graceful ascent into a half-pipe?  Or maybe, you just need some new music ideas for the new pair of Skullcandy headphones that you just bought from The Clymb.

Check out some favorites from the Skullcandy team riders.

Now, take time to check out this cool VONZIPPER Snow Team video:

The number of outdoor apps available for the iPhone and Android phones are endless. We know what the app makers claim their apps can do, but we wanted to hear from the people who would actually put these apps to the test. A few of our members volunteered to test out a few and give us their feedback.

Some of you can still get some serious wave time in (jealous) as not everyone is yet ready to surrender to winter weather. Clymb member Andres Aguirre checked out three surfing apps and shared his thoughts below.

If you’re a surfer with other responsibilities outside of surfing you’re often looking for the best source of information to help guide you to the best spot to surf that day.  This search for information does not have to go further than the smart phone in your hand.

I reviewed three popular surf forecast Android apps over a 60 day period, Skullcandy’s all in one app powered by Surfline, SwellInfo’s app by Global Surf Industries, and Surfline’s own surf report app. Every app had their own take on what users want to see.

Skullcandy: This app has a nice graphical interface .  With all the graphics and everything the application does, results in it slowing down.  I found that the location finder did not work, even if I was within a mile from a well known surf break.  I never was able to use the location finder through the entire test period.  However, if I entered the name of the surf break, the application could find the break.  This however would defeat the purpose if you were new to the area and were trying to find a place to surf.  There is a map function you can also use, but since the locations don’t come in it takes some scrolling around to find your location, but the surf breaks do not populate on the map when you’ve zoomed in on your location.  When you find a surf location and actually bring it up on the app, the graphics are elementary.  The outstanding graphics of the main menu do not translate down to the surf break view.  Overall, if you know exactly where you’re going surfing, don’t mind how long the load times are, and a lot of extra stuff that you don’t use; this could be the app for you.

SwellInfo: This app had an upfront cost associated with it. At $2.99 it is a small price to pay for the value that it brings.  It’s refreshingly simple.  Navigating to set your location is easy.  After drilling down to your spot, it brings up my favorite feature of the app.  In one screen you can see the five day forecast, high and low tide times, swell height and interval, air temp, water temp, as well as wind speed and direction.  If I’m in a situation where I have to pick the days over the next week that I can surf, this is a great way to do it.  Each morning and afternoon are given a condition rating from clean to choppy and color coded.  What ever this app loses in presentation, it gains back plus some in functionality.

Surfline Surf Report:  This is probably the one app that I have been looking forward to the most.  The app has surf cams that allow you to see almost real time video feeds (for Surfline.com subscribers) or a screen shot of the surf break for the free version.  The report feature has wave size at the break, text description of conditions (twice a day), tide chart with time of high tide and low tide as well as tide height.  The report has swell direction, swell interval, swell height, swell size over time graph, wind graph.  The forecast feature only goes forward three days ass opposed to five days on the swellinfo app.  Navigating through all the different features is very easy and fast.  Each screen is simple and functional.  Additional features for surfline.com subscribers are streaming cameras, LOLA data and a five day forecast window.

Fine print: If a computer model (i.e. app) can predict conditions at your surf break 8/10 times correctly that is a very high level of success.  6/10 times is more realistic.  Break conditions (waves, wave quality) at the time you surf are a result of a very complex mix of factors such as tide height, swell direction and wind.  Some breaks are so fickle that a matter of 30 min can mean the difference between epic session and epic fail.  The best way to correlate what you find via the internet/apps and actual suf conditions is time in the water.

Would any of these apps be beneficial to you? Why or why not? What are some other surfing apps you think are comparable/better?

Andres, thanks for such a comprehensive review.

We got an overwhelming response to our request for members to review more apps. If you’ve not yet let your interest known, please send an email to nina@theclymb.com. We’ve got lots of apps available. If you’ve already sent an email, we’ll be in touch.

It seems I may have been a bit premature (perhaps to get the weekend here sooner?) in yesterday’s blog when I teased that our final GEIGERRIG event of 2011 would be this Wednesday.

It’s actually today.

This is a good thing because that means you can get your hands on their innovative, spray-action hydration packs that much sooner. I did get everything else right, though: Their spray-action, bite-don’t-suck valves mean that you can hydrate more frequently and effectively. It also makes cleaning off gear, cuts and scrapes, and sweaty brows a breeze. Sharing is also simple and clean, with no worry of germ or food transference should you want to share a drink with your pet or running partner.

If you missed out on our previous GEIGERRIG event, now’s the perfect time to correct that. This will be our last GEIGERRIG event of 2011, so don’t sleep on this one. Get your GEIGERRIG at exclusive Clymb member pricing of up to 50% off here.

Every GEIGERRIG pack comes with a SKULLCANDY MOUNTAIN PASSPORT, filled with discount passes to some of the best resorts in the U.S. and Canada. Simply register the code inside your passport at the GEIGERRIG site and then redeem the passes at one of the participating resorts. In most cases, using one pass pays for the pack. In every case, using more than one pass makes you a profit.

Of course, we couldn’t offer up such a great deal without featuring the ultra hot headphones and earbuds from Skullcandy that are like medicine for your ears. Score those and Skullcandy tees/sweatshirt at up to 50% off, here.

Don’t forget: if you pick up an exclusive The Clymb tee, your entire order ships for free. Stop by Facebook or Twitter if you have any questions or you need an invite to shop The Clymb.

Check out the GEIGERRIG presentation at this year’s Outdoor Retailer show:

No stranger to The Clymb, Skullcandy makes some of the slickest, high-quality earbuds and headphones on the market. We’re offering up a selection of both at up to 60% off. Seriously, check out the styles. There are some new ones we’ve not featured before.

Lafuma produces world-class mountain, trekking, hiking, trail and running gear. Starting today, members will receive up to 50% off their footwear. Check out the selection of trail and hiking footwear for men and women here.

And just in time to spend it on the great brands above, later today we’ll be announcing the two winners of our photo contest. Members were encouraged to share photos of their Clymb gear in action this past July 4th weekend. We’ll be giving away two $50 credits to The Clymb at 5pm EST today.

To stay caught up on future contests, or if you have questions about an order, visit us on Facebook or Twitter. It’s always a good way to snag an invitation to The Clymb if you need one.

We’re constantly coming up with ways in which to enhance your experience with The Clymb. With the addition of a third event each week, it became clear that we needed to change some of the site navigation.

Now you can shop different events without going back to the main page. At the top of each sales page is the option to shop the other available events. Also, you can now shop by category (men’s women’s, etc.) and by size within a particular event.

Here’s a quick video explaining how:
