Zebulon Decides to Split: Did you know? On October 14th (that’s today!), 1806, Captain Zebulon Pike made the fateful decision to split his crew of 20 soldiers into two separate detachments to further explore the Great Plains and interior of America. One detachment headed down the Arkansas River from Colorado, and safely returned to St. Louis. Zebulon, then 27 years old, led the other crew west, up the Arkansas River, to explore the interior. After four months, Zebulon’s party was captured by Spanish soldiers and imprisoned for years, where they likely thought back to this day when they parted ways and thought aloud, “Damn you Zebulon!”

Grandmother of Conservation: Did you know? Outdoor enthusiasts seeking a reason for revelry today should celebrate the life of Margaret Thomas Murie, one of the most influential conservationists of the past 100 years. Born August 18 (that’s today!), 1902, Murie was a naturalist, author, and adventurer whose conservation work earned her the Audubon Medal, the John Muir Award, the title “Grandmother of the Conservation Movement” by both the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the highest civilian honor awarded by the United States. Even if you’re not familiar with Murie, you’ve probably heard of her work. Among other feats, she is responsible for the creation and subsequent doubling in size of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Murie passed away in 2003 but you can celebrate her birthday today by throwing on some John Denver. Renowned for their adventures in Alaska, she and her husband inspired him to write the ballad, “A Song For All Lovers.”

Axe Me Again, For the First Time: Did you know? SOG makes a mean tomahawk. And we’re selling it right now. One of the most obvious benefits to having a tomahawk is throwing it into things. But how? According to artofmanliness.com, you grip the ‘hawk’ as if shaking someone’s hand. Then you swing your throwing arm down by your side. Once the head passes your leg, you swing your arm back up spring-style until the blade is behind your head, at which point you fire your arm forward as if throwing a baseball, making sure to release the hawk when your arm is straight, at which point the hawk will fly from your hand directly into the target because you are awesome at things like this. The final step is the most important: Look at your buddies to make sure that they know that you know that you are more equipped to survive the apocalypse than they are. Then demand the rest of their beef jerky out of principle.
Happy May Day, Clymbers. We’re adding a huge assortment of multi-tools, knives, socks, and Men’s and Women’s cycling apparel to the menu for you today. May Day? Mayday? Help! Did you know? Every year on May 1 (that’s today!), people across the world celebrate May Day, a spring festival dating back thousands of years to pre-Christian Europe. That particular May Day never really caught on in the United States but another one that you’re probably more familiar with did: ‘Mayday’, the international call signal that radio operators say three times in succession when their craft is in dire straights. ‘Mayday’ was coined by a British radio officer who based it on the French “Venez m’aider,” which means, “come help me.”
Not many outside of adventure-seeking circles had heard of Andy Lewis before this past Sunday’s Super Bowl Halftime Show. Today, people can’t stop talking about the toga-clad, curly-haired ball of bouncing energy being kissed by Madonna. SkAndy (Sketchy Andy), BASE Pro, and Slackline King are all apt names given to the 25-year-old.
That performance also made ‘slacklining’ a household name. Slacklining is the act of balancing along a narrow, flexible piece of webbing which is low to the ground and usually anchored between two trees. Even though its roots are in climbing, it has evolved into highlining and freelining (balancing hundreds of feet in the air without a safety leash), and slacklining is also a perfect backyard activity, cross trainer and fitness tool.
