Death at the Races: Did you know?

On August 15, (that’s today!), 1945, the pro­fes­sion­al cyclist Bruno Cari­ni and Dante Gianel­lo were struck by a US Army Jeep dur­ing the Grand Prix du Débar­que­ment. The Jeep’s dri­ver nev­er stopped. The acci­dent killed Cari­ni and result­ed in Gianel­lo los­ing his leg and effec­tive­ly end­ing his career, which includ­ed the high­light of win­ning the 13th stage of the Tour de France in 1938, and fin­ish­ing 10th overall.
