Balloon Over the Alps: Did you know?

On August 21 (that’s today!), 1972, Don Cameron and Mark Yarry became the first people to fly a hot air balloon over the Alps. Their voyage ended 36 miles away in the small, pastoral town of Biella, Italy, where thousands of residents swarmed to congratulate the balloonists on their accomplishment.

Midsummer Night’s Meme: Did you know? Today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. For thousands of years, different cultures have celebrated the day and passed their traditions on to future generations who have tweaked it appropriately to fit their needs. Mostly their celebrations involved drinking and feasting and lighting stuff on fire. Ancient pagans loved to party as much as the next culture. They referred to the summer solstice as Midsummer and would celebrate by building gigantic bonfires and getting drunk on mead before jumping through them. The goal wasn’t to be brotastic. The men and women believed that their crops would grow as high as they were able to jump. It didn’t work. The mead did though! Do you have any plans for ye olde longest day of the year?

Happy Sunday Clymbers. We love to see you here but shouldn’t you be at a barbecue? Well, you made the right decision. Today’s event is every bit as exciting as burgers and potato salad. And odds are, you have first dibs. We have mountains of footwear for you today. Hiking boots, running shoes, sandals, everything. Have a look then enjoy the rest of your weekend! We’ll check back in with you tomorrow.

Fresh on the menu today:

Men’s Footwear: Why just walk like a man when you could be running, hiking, and shufflin’ down the beach like one too? Highlights from today’s collection include the Teva Fus-lon Water Shoe and the Patagonia Boaris, which was designed for boar hunting. No kidding!

Women’s Footwear: Those boots were made for walking. And that’s just what they’ll do. Which is why you need some trail runners too. And some sandals. Or just do it all with the adidas Terrex Trek FM Mid GTX, a super-light hiker with a GORE-TEX membrane.

Denim Dreams: Did you know? Some men just want to see the world burn. Others want to shroud it in denim. On May 20 (that’s today!), 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received the patent for blue jeans. With daisy dukes and cutoff vests still a long way off, the patent focused simply on Davis’s method of attaching metal rivets to pocket corners and other points of strain, which increased the strength of the garments.

Happy Friday, Clymbers. We trust you’ve got some exciting missions planned for this weekend. Depending on where in the country you live, you will probably encounter snow or spring rains out there. In the mountains throughout the cold and completely rain-soaked Pacific Northwest, you will run into both. It’s appropriate, though completely unplanned, that the brands on the docket for today are respectively synonymous with water and snow. Have a look. It’ll put you in the mood for a great weekend spent outdoors.

Here’s a little more about today’s featured brands:

Teva: In the beginning, the driving message at Teva (pronounced TEH-vah, not Tee-vah) was footwear focused: “We play in the water, but we also see the need to be protected from it.” But as the world changed and Teva grew, the company adapted its message to include, “We also need to protect the water so that future generations can play in it.” Teva now works with numerous nonprofit conservation organizations to help keep the world’s liquid playgrounds clean. In its A Pair for a Foot campaign, for every pair of Teva shoes sold, the company protects a linear foot of global waterways in rivers, lakes, and oceans. In 2012, the company will steward something in the neighborhood of 4.4 million linear feet. That’s a lot of water—and it’s a great example of why we at The Clymb are proud to be a part of the outdoor industry, where companies like Teva see protecting the natural world as part of business as usual. Support a great company and a great cause with Men’s and Women’s Teva footwear, on sale today on The Clymb for member-exclusive pricing.

Nils: Fashionable resort snowear with a glove-like fit and a focus on function, Nils apparel is as appropriate for the mountain as the après ski rendezvous afterward. Sick of looking like the abominable snowman on the slopes? With Nils’s legendary sleek fit, bulky technical winter apparel is a thing of the past. Whether turning heads on the hill or in the lodge, nothing says power, sex appeal, and peak performance like Nils. Commit to looking better on the slopes with Women’s Nils technical apparel, on sale today at The Clymb for member-exclusive pricing.

PLUS… There’s still time to save on Timex, Cross, Looptworks, KAVU, COAL, Uclear, MPG, & DannyShane.

Sandals: Did you know? Teva (pronounced TEH-vah, not Tee-vah, in case you missed it above) is the Hebrew word for nature. Mark Thatcher invented the Teva “amphibious utility sandals” in 1982 after deciding that his flip-flops didn’t cut it during his work as a river rafting guide.

For some, skiing is a hobby. For others it’s a way of life.  I was fortunate enough to grow up in places known for having a landscape filled with high mountain peaks, easy accessibility to outdoor recreation, and winters that made outsiders forget about any previous notions of what they defined as “powder.” Self-proclaimed or not, I found myself surrounded by “ski-bums” – a lot of them.  The funny thing about ski-bums is that for the most part those who don’t look at skiing as a way of life and instead a hobby, aren’t usually privy to the passion behind these fearless snow enthusiasts. Their lifestyle seems foreign, maybe a bit lazy and feverishly unambitious. What people don’t realize however is that these “ski-bums” have passion like no other. They are willing to sacrifice comforts of life to do something they love. They choose to do something that excites them and makes them happy every single day of their lives despite having the option to take the path of least resistance.  In my years living in ski communities, there is one thing that always amazes me and never surprises me: passionate skiers/riders always find a way to make it work in everything they do. They turn adventures into a lifestyle and passion into profits.

FlyLow did exactly that.  The small company was born from the creative minds of two Jackson Hole “ski-bums” and in a few short years, FlyLow has made a name for itself in a sea of outdoor gear and apparel.  They call co-founder Dan Abrams a soul skier and for good reason.  The FlyLow story is one of our favorite human-powered adventures and we’re excited to debut them on The Clymb today. Shop men’s and women’s freeride ski apparel here.

Then, Walk This Way with boots, trail runners, and more for men, women and children, from some of your favorite footwear brands like Chaco, Teva, KEEN, VIVOBAREFOOT, and more!

Remember to drop by Facebook or Twitter if you have a question about any of these events or if you’d like an invitation to join — and shop — The Clymb.

I’ve never been good with remembering events, dates, birthdays, anniversaries, names, faces, or anything except totally useless information like all the lines from the first “Austin Powers”, the starting lineup of the 1986 Mets, and the discography of bands nobody remembers anymore like Soul Coughing.

Anyone? Anyone? Just me?

When I looked at the calendar a couple of weeks ago and realized that the one-year anniversary of The Clymb was coming up, I was thrown off a little bit. It felt like we launched just a couple of months ago. It kind of hit us that all the work we have been putting in was paying off. (I was going to say that it forced us to take stock of our lives but that makes it sound like the website went out and bought an outrageous sports car and started dating websites half our age.)

Anyway, what I am getting at is that we have had an unbelievable year that wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of an extremely dedicated team here at The Clymb, our valued partner brands, and the member community that has grown around our site.

Our members have been absolutely amazing and we completely owe our growth to you. You not only have believed in our site, but also told your friends, family, co-workers, and anyone else that would listen about who we are and what we do. You have been a pleasure to interact with via social media, the phone, email, and in person. You’ve been patient and understanding when we have gone through the occasional growing pain. But most of all, you have given us feedback, support, and ideas to make the experience for our members better.

Thanks for shopping with us, for being our biggest advocates, for being easy to work with, and for supporting us. This year will be even bigger and better.

Starting us off on the right foot (pun totally intended) is an amazing collection of multi-functional, waterproof, footwear for men, women and children from Teva. They make for an excellent transition into fall. Members will enjoy up to 50% in this three-day event.

And we are particularly proud to offer our members up to 60% off men and women lifestyle apparel from LooptWorks. They’re a grassroots company based out of Portland, OR. Their focus is on sustainability and “closing the loop” in the apparel industry by using materials that would normally end up in the landfill.

Summer’s in full swing; record highs across the country can attest to that, and people are heading to the water to beat the heat. Much like a good boy scout, we want to make sure you’re always prepared when you hit the lake, river, or ocean this summer. We couldn’t decide between SIGG bottles or DAKINE gear. Maybe some Teva footwear? Well, when we get all indecisive like that, it usually ends up being to your benefit because we figure you can’t go wrong with having it all.

That’s how we roll.

Members of The Clymb will receive up to 60% off DAKINE, Teva, Anon, SIGG and more, starting today at 9am PST and ending on Thursday (7/15) at 9am PST. With this event, we got you covered inside and out. As usual, events are for members only. If you need a membership, the best way to get one is by sending us a tweet or checking out the info section of our Facebook page.

We like to give stuff away.

Because we can.

In fact, we feel like giving away $100 credit to one of our members. We agonized over the best way to do this and decided that a Twitter contest would be the best way. You know, that squashes any claims of favoritism. (Even though you know you’re totally our favorite, right?)

If you post a tweet about our Teva event between now and Thursday (6/17) at 9am PST, you will be entered into a drawing for a $100 credit to The Clymb. Make sure to include us (@theclymb) in your tweet so we can see it. You have to be a member to receive the credit so tweet us for an invite or visit us on Facebook.

And if you don’t win, don’t worry — there’s still away to get a credit towards great savings. Click on My Account from The Clymb main page to locate your unique invitation link (under My Profile.) Share that link on Twitter, Facebook or email it to your family and friends. When someone who signs up via your link completes their first order, you’ll receive a $10 credit on your account.

See? Told you we like giving stuff away. Now, get to tweetin’!

We’re proud to bring you our first event with Teva —  they provide quality footwear for men, women, and kids including shoes and sandals for water, multi-sports, light hiking and casual wear. For 25 years, Teva has operated under one simple, yet profound, philosophy: Where you find water, you find life. They’ve partnered with amazing organizations dedicated to the conservation and protection of lakes, rivers, coasts and habitats. Teva also operates their business with responsibility and sustainability — always looking for ways to minimize their environmental impact.

Starting at 9am PST today and ending on Thursday (6/17) at 9am PST, members of The Clymb will receive up to 55% off Teva footwear for men, women and kids. If you’re not a member yet, check out our Facebook page or send us a tweet and we’ll make it happen.

In the meantime, here’s a video from Day 1 of the Teva Mountain Games on June 3rd:
