Grandmother of Conservation: Did you know? Outdoor enthusiasts seeking a reason for revelry today should celebrate the life of Margaret Thomas Murie, one of the most influential conservationists of the past 100 years. Born August 18 (that’s today!), 1902, Murie was a naturalist, author, and adventurer whose conservation work earned her the Audubon Medal, the John Muir Award, the title “Grandmother of the Conservation Movement” by both the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the highest civilian honor awarded by the United States. Even if you’re not familiar with Murie, you’ve probably heard of her work. Among other feats, she is responsible for the creation and subsequent doubling in size of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Murie passed away in 2003 but you can celebrate her birthday today by throwing on some John Denver. Renowned for their adventures in Alaska, she and her husband inspired him to write the ballad, “A Song For All Lovers.”

IN OTHER NEWS:

May Day? Mayday? Help! Did you know? Every year on May 1 (that’s today!), people across the world celebrate May Day, a spring festival dating back thousands of years to pre-Christian Europe. That particular May Day never really caught on in the United States but another one that you’re probably more familiar with did: ‘Mayday’, the international call signal that radio operators say three times in succession when their craft is in dire straights. ‘Mayday’ was coined by a British radio officer who based it on the French “Venez m’aider,” which means, “come help me.”

Happy Tuesday, Clymbers. Hopefully you’ve been able to get out there and enjoy some of this snow. But late-season powder isn’t the only thing causing a buzz in the outdoors right now. All over the country, thru-hikers are making final preparations to wend their ways down the nation’s grueling transect routes, such as the 2,627-mile Pacific Crest Trail and the 2,178-mile Appalachian Trail.

As you read this, many of these would-be titans of trekking are procrastinating from work, mapping trail distances and sorting out drop points in their minds. Soon, en route to victory, they’ll pass through multiple states and over hundreds of demoralizing mountains. They will encounter beast aplenty. Of course there’s snow in the mountains, but it kinda makes you want to strap on the backpack and go for a hike, doesn’t it?

Just because you’ve committed to ride out winter for all it’s worth doesn’t mean you should miss out on an opportunity to gear up for next season’s adventures. Today’s events  celebrate the would-be thru-hiker in us all by featuring an assortment of gear, technical apparel, and accessories for lightweight trekking down any trail.

Trekking Essentials: Scott Williamson knows a thing or two about being light of foot on the trail. In 2011, the 39-year-old tree climber from Truckee, California set a new speed record on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), trekking over 2,627-miles from Canada to Mexico in just 64 days. Whether tackling the PCT or a weekend camping trip in the backcountry, today’s trekkers are pushing boundaries, sacrificing traditional distance-trek comforts for the lightest loads. Sleeping pads are getting smaller. Hard-boiled eggs and kielbasas are falling victim to dehydrated foods and lightweight subsistence snacks. Aluminum trekking poles are trumping heavy walking sticks. Looking to lighten your load as you gear up for a new season on the trail? We’ve got you covered. Today at The Clymb, we’re offering a wide selection of Men’s and Women’s Trekking Essentials, including packs, poles, camping pads, microfiber towels, technical apparel, footwear, shelters, hammocks, eyewear, knives, and more.

Tool Logic: Let’s be honest with ourselves. Mother Nature is really more like an older sibling. She doesn’t want to hurt us or force us into helpless situations from which there is seemingly no escape—but she will do either at the slightest provocation. Heading into the great outdoors is like trespassing in said older sibling’s bedroom. The door is open but BEWARE. Tool Logic makes lightweight compact tools, knives, and flashlights to survive whatever fallout you incur—from having to smash out a window to access locked-in keys, to needing super-bright LED lighting to signal a rescue chopper. Today on The Clymb we’re offering a wide selection of innovative Tool Logic multipurpose rescue tools, survival cards, and key rings featuring all survival necessities, from blades to magnesium fire starters. Protection from noogies not included.

Did you know? In the film 127 Hours, James Franco is using the actual camcorder Aron Ralston clutched throughout his death-defying ordeal in Blue John Canyon.

Not many outside of adventure-seeking circles had heard of Andy Lewis before this past Sunday’s Super Bowl Halftime Show. Today, people can’t stop talking about the toga-clad, curly-haired ball of bouncing energy being kissed by Madonna.  SkAndy (Sketchy Andy), BASE Pro, and Slackline King are all apt names given to the 25-year-old.

That performance also made ‘slacklining’ a household name. Slacklining is the act of balancing along a narrow, flexible piece of webbing which is low to the ground and usually anchored between two trees. Even though its roots are in climbing, it has evolved into highlining and freelining (balancing hundreds of feet in the air without a safety leash), and slacklining is also a perfect backyard activity, cross trainer and fitness tool.

Gibbon Slacklines Kits make it easy for anyone to learn this sport and we’re excited that today they’re making their Clymb debut.

And to prepare you for your next day that begins and ends outdoors – you know, a perfect KAVU day – we’ve got a selection of KAVU apparel, bags and accessories for men and women.

Finally, to prepare you for just about anything, we’re featuring an elite selection of knives and tools from SOG, Tool Logic, and Victorinox.

Don’t forget: Our limited time $4.98 shipping is still available and adding a Clymb T‑Shirt to your order means the entire order ships for free!

You also have till Friday 2/10 at midnight EST to vote in our I Wish I Was There Landscape Photo Contest. Vote and help a lucky member win $50 to The Clymb!
