The First World Surf Reserve: Did you know? On Octo­ber 9th (that’s today!), 2010, an inter­na­tion­al group of surfers, sci­en­tists, and envi­ron­men­tal­ists led by Save The Waves and NSR Aus­tralia ded­i­cat­ed the Mal­ibu Surfrid­er Beach as the first World Surf Reserve. The des­ig­na­tion aims to pro­tect the frag­ile marine envi­ron­ments that cre­ate inter­na­tion­al­ly renowned waves. There are cur­rent­ly four World Surf Reserves in the world, but Mal­ibu received the des­ig­na­tion first because it’s the epi­cen­ter of mod­ern surf­ing with a per­fect­ly shaped, long, peel­ing right-han­der that breaks off the point where Mal­ibu Creek enters the sea.
