The First World Surf Reserve: Did you know? On October 9th (that’s today!), 2010, an international group of surfers, scientists, and environmentalists led by Save The Waves and NSR Australia dedicated the Malibu Surfrider Beach as the first World Surf Reserve. The designation aims to protect the fragile marine environments that create internationally renowned waves. There are currently four World Surf Reserves in the world, but Malibu received the designation first because it’s the epicenter of modern surfing with a perfectly shaped, long, peeling right-hander that breaks off the point where Malibu Creek enters the sea.
