On August 5 (that’s today!), 1858, the final cables for the first transat­lantic tele­graph line were set into place, span­ning near­ly 2,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean at a depth often exceed­ing two miles. The transat­lantic cable reduced com­mu­ni­ca­tion time to a mat­ter of min­utes between North Amer­i­ca and Europe. To test the func­tion­al­i­ty of the sys­tem, Pres­i­dent James Buchanan and Queen Vic­to­ria exchanged a for­mal intro­duc­to­ry and com­ple­men­tary mes­sage. Although the sig­nal was weak, the trans­mis­sion was made suc­cess­ful­ly between the two lead­ers. The line ceased to func­tion only three weeks lat­er but this achieve­ment paved the way for future tech­no­log­i­cal advance­ment in communication.

 

Think about how many items we use that come in petro­le­um plas­tic —  a mate­r­i­al meant to last for­ev­er — but we dis­card almost imme­di­ate­ly after use: water bot­tles, cups, uten­sils, toys, con­tain­ers, and elec­tron­ic gad­gets. Where does this plas­tic go?
