Tap, Tap, Taperoo: Did you know? On August 5 (that’s today!), 1858, the final cables for the first transatlantic telegraph line were set into place, spanning nearly 2,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean at a depth often exceeding two miles. The transatlantic cable reduced communication time to a matter of minutes between North America and Europe. To test the functionality of the system, President James Buchanan and Queen Victoria exchanged a formal introductory and complementary message. Although the signal was weak, the transmission was made successfully between the two leaders. The line ceased to function only three weeks later but this achievement paved the way for future technological advancement in communication.

Think about how many items we use that come in petroleum plastic —  a material meant to last forever — but we discard almost immediately after use: water bottles, cups, utensils, toys, containers, and electronic gadgets. Where does this plastic go?

Currently, about 50% ends up in landfills — some recycled into usable goods — but most remains unaccounted for, lost in a void of pollution which, unfortunately, gets washed out to sea. Our oceans have been paying the long-term price for our short-term conveniences.

And while we’ve all donated money to worthy causes and organizations, we’ve occasionally had trouble pinpointing how the money is applied to actual environmental efforts. That frustration was just one of Brian Linton’s motivations when he founded United By Blue, a community-based apparel company. Doing something concrete to combat water pollution was another.

For every United By Blue product purchased, the company removes one pound of waste from oceans, rivers, and waterways through volunteer-powered, sponsored organized clean-ups. We’re proud to feature United By Blue on The Clymb and support their efforts to rid our oceans and waterways of contaminates. For information on United By Blue’s upcoming clean-ups, visit their site.

Deep Blue Blues: Did you know? — More than 14 billion pounds of trash end up in our oceans every year. Nearly 80% of this pollution is land based, which means an out-of-site, out-of-mind mentality is destroying one of our favorite playgrounds. United By Blue, whose surf and outdoor-inspired tees we’re featuring today on The Clymb, is not only a leader in sustainable lifestyle apparel, they’re also passionate advocates for cleaner oceans.
