Ore­gon’s Crown Jew­el: Did you know? On Octo­ber 29th (that’s today!), 1792, Lt. William Broughton, a mem­ber of Cap­tain George Van­cou­ver’s dis­cov­ery expe­di­tion that explored and chart­ed the Pacif­ic North­west coast range, coined the name for Ore­gon’s tallest peak, Mt. Hood. He named it after a man he admired, the British Admi­ral, Samuel Hood. The moun­tain is a promi­nent land­mark, vis­i­ble up to a hun­dred miles away. North­ern Expo­sure: Did you know? Octo­ber 6th (that’s today!), 1861, is the birth­day of famous Nor­we­gian explor­er, Fridtjof Wedel-Jarls­berg Nansen. Lead­ing an expe­di­tion across the Green­land inte­ri­or in 1888, Nansen pio­neered suc­cess­ful arc­tic trav­el with inno­va­tions in equip­ment and cloth­ing that would pave the way and influ­ence gen­er­a­tions of polar trav­el­ers. Win­ner of a Nobel Peace Prize, Nansen is rec­og­nized as one of the most influ­en­tial Nor­we­gians of all time.

The Lit­tle Stove That Could: Did you know? We’re car­ry­ing Esbit camp stoves today. Ever won­der where those lit­tle won­ders came from? Alex Soy­er laid the ground­work for the mod­ern-day portable stove in 1849. He designed the small, sin­gle-burn­er stove to run on pres­sur­ized fuel and to have suf­fi­cient heat­ing pow­er to cook a meal in a cou­ple of min­utes. Beyond the Bil­la: Did you know? Like many surfers, Aus­tralian wave-chas­ing board shaper Gor­don Mer­chant was inspired by the ocean. And his ideas would influ­ence the future of the sport and sur­round­ing indus­try for­ev­er. While liv­ing in a surf Mec­ca on the Gold Coast, Mer­chant found­ed a lit­tle board shorts brand called Bill­abong. His dirt-bag busi­ness, strange­ly named for an Oxbow-style lake, was des­tined to become syn­ony­mous with surf­ing. Oh, and he’s also cred­it­ed with invent­ing the first leg ropes.
