Old Man on the Moun­tain: Did you know? On Octo­ber 2nd (that’s today!), 2011, Richard Byer­ley from Touchet, Wash­ing­ton became the old­est man to ever hike to the sum­mit of Mt. Kil­i­man­jaro in Tan­za­nia. He was 84 years old. Byer­ley stays in shape farm­ing alfal­fa in Washington’s Palouse Prairie, and by ski­ing all win­ter at Sun Val­ley, Ida­ho. Stay­ing active paid off dur­ing his five-day expe­di­tion to Africa’s high­est sum­mit. When asked how he felt about becom­ing the Guin­ness Book of World Record hold­er for his accom­plish­ment, Byer­ley, who accom­plished the feat accom­pa­nied by his two grand­chil­dren, respond­ed, “I smile a lot about it.”
