Old Man on the Mountain: Did you know? On October 2nd (that’s today!), 2011, Richard Byerley from Touchet, Washington became the oldest man to ever hike to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. He was 84 years old. Byerley stays in shape farming alfalfa in Washington’s Palouse Prairie, and by skiing all winter at Sun Valley, Idaho. Staying active paid off during his five-day expedition to Africa’s highest summit. When asked how he felt about becoming the Guinness Book of World Record holder for his accomplishment, Byerley, who accomplished the feat accompanied by his two grandchildren, responded, “I smile a lot about it.”
