Iceland isn’t necessarily the place that comes to mind when one thinks of popular surfing destinations, yet it’s exactly where Chris Burkard, Ben Weiland, and a group of six surfers head to with hopes of finding perfect surf in freezing conditions. Taking to the remote island nation’s frozen coastline, the crew travels through brutal winter storms and frigid cold in search of swell. Not to mention it was all during the worst storm to hit Iceland’s shore in the last 25 years.
The film is the brainchild of Chris Burkard, who is by now a photographer of mythic proportions. Burkard is not only know for being one of the most followed adventure photographers on the planet, but also for his proclivity for adventuring to the far reaches of our planet.
Under An Arctic Sky is sure to be a film that is as much about surfing as it is about the trials and tribulations of any adventure; those impossible moments mid trip where there is so much weight in the uncertainty. The trailer alone promises some near perfect looking surf set against an array of epic landscapes captured with stunning precision. Not to mention the crew got to surf under a night sky filled with the Aurora Borealis.
